A closer examination of Chinese texts suggests the recipe may indeed have originated in Canton. By the 20th century, Americanized chop suey , casseroles totally devoid of any Oriental ingredients, became an economical family supper staple.

Now, how do you do a retrospective of Performance Art? And more importantly, how do you do one well? The exhibition title, The Artist is Present, refers to the work Abramovic is performing downstairs from the retrospective. In the main foyer, Abramovic is seated at a table facing another empty chair. She arrives each day before the museum opens, takes her seat and progresses into a trance like state. Abramovic remains in that state until after the museum closes.

His family eventually settled in White Plains, New York. He spent much of his childhood learning the tenets of Judaism, but by the time he was a teenager, Matisyahu began to rebel against his rigid upbringing. He became a self-professed “Phish-head”, taking hallucinogens and following the rock band Phish on tour. After he finished Muss, he returned to New York, where he subsequently left high school after the first day of his senior year to travel throughout the US.
A stint in a rehabilitation center in upstate New York followed. Miller then attended a wilderness expedition trip in Oregon for teenagers. This was now my search for my own identity, and part of Judaism feeling more important and relevant to me. Around that same time, he says, he started to become more interested in Judaism, taking classes on Jewish spirituality at The New School. He recounts that at the same time, he started praying, getting himself a prayer book and prayer shawl.

FlynnRedberg over a year ago If you have a brain, this isn’t the matchmaker for you — I signed up to meet with a rep as I wanted to know what I was going to get for my money. Boy am I a glad I did that instead of just signing up blindly. We decided to meet at my office after work. The first thing the rep did upon meeting me was take the edge of my cardigan sweater and open it. She informed me it was because she had the same sweater at home, but I am not stupid. She wanted to see what kind of figure I had.
That’s fine as appearance is important, but don’t lie to me about it. The interview went downhill from there. She continuously spoke down to me for about a half hour she actually drew me some pictures , as if she was trying to make me feel desperate. She told me I am not making this up that the reason the world is the way it is now, is because women are buying their own homes, travelling on their own and opening their own business instead of spending the time and money to get a man.
I was shocked to say the least – why would I spend money on a matchmaking service that had values like that?? When I told her that it was a lot of money to spend without any guarantees, she asked me what I would rather spend that kind of money on.

The time has come to rethink wilderness. This will seem a heretical claim to many environmentalists, since the idea of wilderness has for decades been a fundamental tenet—indeed, a passion—of the environmental movement, especially in the United States. For many Americans wilderness stands as the last remaining place where civilization, that all too human disease, has not fully infected the earth. It is an island in the polluted sea of urban-industrial modernity, the one place we can turn for escape from our own too-muchness.
Seen in this way, wilderness presents itself as the best antidote to our human selves, a refuge we must somehow recover if we hope to save the planet. The more one knows of its peculiar history, the more one realizes that wilderness is not quite what it seems. Far from being the one place on earth that stands apart from humanity, it is quite profoundly a human creation—indeed, the creation of very particular human cultures at very particular moments in human history.
It is not a pristine sanctuary where the last remnant of an untouched, endangered, but still transcendent nature can for at least a little while longer be encountered without the contaminating taint of civilization. Wilderness hides its unnaturalness behind a mask that is all the more beguiling because it seems so natural. As we gaze into the mirror it holds up for us, we too easily imagine that what we behold is Nature when in fact we see the reflection of our own unexamined longings and desires.
To assert the unnaturalness of so natural a place will no doubt seem absurd or even perverse to many readers, so let me hasten to add that the nonhuman world we encounter in wilderness is far from being merely our own invention. I celebrate with others who love wilderness the beauty and power of the things it contains. Each of us who has spent time there can conjure images and sensations that seem all the more hauntingly real for having engraved themselves so indelibly on our memories.
