The HEI uses a pointless distributor. It was first equipped on some GM cars and trucks beginning in the early seventies, and became standard equipment by the mid-seventies. The HEI distributor eliminated the constant servicing of the old points and condensers found in the earlier standard style distributors. The spark on the HEI system has much greater intensity that older ignition systems. The high intensity spark produces a clean burn in the cylinders and reduces exhaust emissions. Connect the primary wires to the HEI distributor, via a plug that snaps into the distributor cap.

Feeding the coil with 14 volts instead of 7 automatically improves spark intensity, improving throttle response, fuel mileage, and maybe even adding a bit more power, too. The average person thinks anything from the factory is automatically the best it can be, but real car people know new technology usually means improvement. Honest Ford guys will admit that the Duraspark system has not lived up to its name, and replacement boxes are even less reliable.

While original factory Mopar ignition boxes are good, the design for both the Ford and Mopar boxes suffers from an often overlooked, yet crucial design consideration. A magnetic pickup creates a signal when the rotating pole piece on the distributor shaft crosses the fixed magnet.

So your ready to wire up an HEI? Heres the summary in a nutshell; Replace the resistance wire that ran to your points system, from the fuseblock, with a 12guage wire (pink insulated if you want to remain factory compliant) and hook it up to the HEI “BAT” terminal.

I have great fun with my Jeeps, and like everyone else, I have to work on my Jeeps. I don’t like doing the same job over and over and over again Ignition module failure is a pain in the ass at the best of times, and when you are hunting or trail riding several miles from civilization, it’s maddening. I’ve had factory DuraSpark modules last 20 years and not complain. There is no reason a module should have to be changed 3 or 4 times a year! So to that end, I’m posting this aftermarket module replacement with instructions.

This is the culprit, a ‘Standard Ignition’ version of a DuraSpark module.

In the mid-’70s, leaner mixtures demanded greater voltage and more spark energy to kick off combustion. The HEI distributor is still an inductive-discharge ignition, but exchanges points for an electronic device called a module. Since this system produces more voltage and amperage output than a point-type ignition, it requires a larger-diameter cap to prevent voltage crossfire inside the distributor cap.

The large cap also offers extra space to host the coil, making the HEI distributor self-contained.

The HEI system controls the primary current in the ignition to time the spark via a magnetic signal of the pick up coil. When the teeth are aligned, the magnetic field increases, which induces a electric current through the pick up coil windings.

We will start out with the basic operation of the early HEI High Energy Ignition as it debut in mid and work toward the ESC electronic spark control as it appeared in But first the basics. Courtesy of GM The standard parts for a HEI distributor that replaced the breaker plate and points in the previous distributor: Timer core Ignition control module Permanent magnet and pick up coil The HEI system controls the primary current in the ignition to time the spark via a magnetic signal of the pick up coil.

When the teeth are aligned, the magnetic field increases, which induces a electric current through the pick up coil windings. AS the timer core and pick up coil move away from each other, the magnetic field collapses and the voltage signal is diminished. The magnetic field and pick up coil generate an AC alternating current in the pick up coil leads and the windings.

The 9 cap is available at your local GM dealer. Ask for AC Delco type RC32 part and a 10 cap is available at most autoparts store under a Stant part number , if they don’t have it, have them order it for you. The lower pressure rated caps are not carried by the store much but they are available. Wright One item that makes the radiator leak is using the wrong Pressure Cap. Should be 9 pounds no greater than 10 pounds. Therefore I use a 7 pound cap for many years.

The following instructions are for creating a MegaSquirt to Relay Board cable. It is for those who are creating their own harness. With both boxes mounted, measure the distance between them from DB connector to DB connector – this will be the length that you will cut the individual wires. If you are not using a Relay Board, allow enough length in each of your wires to reach the target component.

It is often better to be too long and trim afterwards, than to be too short and have to splice additional lengths on. For a Relay Board cable, you can move both heat shrink pieces to the center of the wire length, and then twisting the center of the wire with a few twists to hold the heat shrink in place, so that it does not fall off the wire or run down while soldering the connection.

Can u run a MSD 6al box with stock hei distributor?

Heres the summary in a nutshell; Replace the resistance wire that ran to your points system, from the fuseblock, with a 12guage wire pink insulated if you want to remain factory compliant and hook it up to the HEI “BAT” terminal. Okay, so you want more; The points system has two wires running to the coil, one is the above mentioned resistance wire.

This wire provides reduced voltage to the coil while the engine is running. The other wire originates from the starter R terminal the 6 stud furthest from the engine block on the starter solenoid. This wire provides full battery voltage to the coil during cranking only. All your old points wiring can be eliminated.

This is for a completely new electronic ignition system, replacing a current one or a points system , on a Chrysler Corporation vehicle. First, go down to the trusty auto parts store and tell them either: They do the exact same thing; the 4 pin simply as extra ballast integrated into it. You can use a 4 pin box with a 4 pin resistor, but you cannot use a 5 pin box with a 2 pin resistor. Dan Stern also pointed out that you will need a standalone, late-model, spool-type coil, either GM or Mopar, or an MSD Blaster, which fits the stock can-type coil bracket.

Otherwise the coil will have a short life. Pat Conners wrote that wires 2 and 3 should go where 4 and 5 are, and vice versa. We’ll check on this. Terminal positions may depend on the vintage of the actual ECU controller being used. However, I make no claim as to whether the actual ‘numbers’ are right.

Tachometer Hook-Up to HEI

Dear Fellow Members, I hesitate to do this my hard drive is only 1gb , but I’m going to solicit advice from the collected Willys “brain trust” on this site. I finally got my 58 cj3b purchased three months ago home this past weekend. I know, I know I should be disbarred from the Willys club for waiting so long, but its a long story so don’t ask. The body is solid and straight, no cancer, very little surface rust and even has a solid tool box.

Hook up timing light to #1 cylinder. Chevy performance engines run best with initial timing set at 10 degrees before top dead center. Adjust as necessary by rotating distributor.

One minute you can be soft and absorbent over the rocks and trails, the next you can be cranked up to the max for high speed pre-running over the ruts and rocks. As it turns out pre-running can be hard on a stock ignition system. I found this out during a spring trip into the fern covered mountains when some high-speed pre-running fun shook a bug out of the ignition system of my Jeep CJ Several rounds of testing and troubleshooting yielded no cause and no fix for the ailing sparkless stock Ford Duraspark ignition system.

Before spending too much time on it, I decided it was time for an upgrade. They also make them for the 6 cylinder engine as well. They’re a durable 1-piece design with the coil and module mounted internally for an easy 1-wire hook-up. Plus by eliminating the stock AMC ballast resistor, more ignition voltage results and you get improved spark that permits a bigger spark plug gap, resulting in more power and reduced plug fouling.

When you look at a stock Jeep CJ-7 ignition system, it consists of a few key components. First the starter solenoid provides power. You also have a coil, the distributor, a vacuum advance, a cap and rotor, below the cap and rotor, an induction coil and a star gear that tells the ignition module when to ground the coil, which in turn sends spark to the rotor and out to the spark plugs.

All of these main components are in different locations under the hood and a bunch of wires run back and forth to interconnect the components. My Stock Ford Duraspark ignition system had a few minor upgrades. An MSD Blaster Coil built for offroad abuse, a set of aftermarket spark plug wires, quality spark plugs and some new stock parts, those being a new cap and rotor, a new pickup coil under the cap, a new ignition module and solid, soldered wiring.
